چکیده

Considering their health effects and potential future regulations, it is critical to understand the formation and control of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) in source waters and drinking water treatment plants (WTPs), and to develop strategies for the removal of its precursors. Furthermore, the impacts of various temporal and climatic events (e.g., drought periods, run offs or major rains, algae growth/die off, seasonal changes, and lake turnovers) on the occurrence of NDMA precursors in source waters and its removal across drinking water treatment plants need to be better understood. Prior to this project, only a few studies have been performed with limited focus and sampling events on the temporal variations of NDMA and other nitrosamine precursors in natural waters and treatability during water treatment. Furthermore, there are still research needs to examine the efficacy of activated carbon adsorption and oxidation processes on the NDMA precursor control.

NDMA formation during chlorination and chloramination of aqueous diuron solutions.

Formation of the potent carcinogen N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) during chlorine disinfection of water containing secondary amines is now generally acknowledged. The phenylurea herbicide diuron is one of the most widely used herbicides in California, has been frequently detected in California's water sources with a transient nature of appearance, and has a structure that suggests it might be an...

Influence of nitrogen source on NDMA formation during chlorination of diuron.

N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) is formed during chlorination of water containing the herbicide diuron (N'-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-N,N-dimethylurea) but formation is greatly enhanced in the presence of ammonia (chloramination). Groundwater impacted by agricultural runoff may contain diuron and relatively high total nitrogen concentrations; this study examines the impact of the nitrogen form (ammoniu...

Adsorption of N-nitrosodimethylamine precursors by powdered and granular activated carbon.

Activated carbon (AC) has been shown to remove precursors of halogenated disinfection byproducts. Granular and powdered activated carbon (GAC, PAC) were investigated for their potential to adsorb N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) precursors from blends of river water and effluent from a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). At bench scale, waters were exposed to lignite or bituminous AC, either as PAC...

Role of chlorine dioxide in NDMA formation from oxidation of model amines

1 N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) is an emerging disinfection by-product, and we show 2 that use of chlorine dioxide (ClO2) has the potential to increase NDMA formation in waters 3 containing precursors with hydrazine moieties. NDMA formation was measured after 4 oxidation of 13 amines by monochloramine, ClO2 and pre-treatment with ClO2 followed by 5 post-monochloramination. Daminozide, a plant g...

N-nitrosodimethylamine and trihalomethane formation and minimisation in Southeast Queensland drinking water.

This study assesses the prevalence of disinfection by-product (DBP) precursors in some Southeast Queensland drinking water sources by conducting formation potential experiments for the four regulated trihalomethanes (THMs), and the potent carcinogen, N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA). NDMA formation potentials were consistently low (<5-21 ng/L), and total THM (tTHM) formation potentials were consis...
